What Used Dive Gear Is Worth: How Certified Pre-Owned Gear Is Priced
There is no blue book for used scuba gear, so here is how a service center that buys, sells and certifies it actually sets a price.
The three prices of any piece of used gear
For any regulator, computer or BCD there is a private-sale price, a certified price and a new price, and they are related. The private-sale price is what the item fetches with an unknown history. The certified price adds a full service, a bench test and a warranty. The new price is the current retail price of the same or the replacement model. Certified used gear on DescendAgain generally sells for 40 to 60 percent of the new price of the same model, with the service already done; private-sale gear should be priced with a full service on top, which is usually what closes the gap.
What moves the price up
- A current or recently discontinued model with parts and service kits still available.
- A brand with a real service network. A regulator nobody can get parts for is worth less however good it was.
- A verifiable service record. Dated, with measurements.
- Complete sets: a first stage, primary, octopus and gauges from the same family sell for more together than apart.
- Low dive counts on a computer, and a battery system that is still supported.
What moves it down
- Discontinued models with no parts supply. We list the service status for each model we handle on its model page.
- Cosmetic damage that hints at neglect: corrosion in the ports, sun-faded fabric, chalky rubber.
- Missing items: a computer without its transmitter, a BCD without its weight pockets, a drysuit with dead seals.
- Anything on a manufacturer recall list that has not been through the recall service.
Why sold prices are published here
Every item that sells on DescendAgain keeps its page as a record of what that model actually fetched, certified, in that month. Those pages are the closest thing to a price guide the used dive gear market has, and they are built from real sales rather than asking prices. Start from the certified used dive gear landing page and follow any model to its history. If you are on the other side of the deal, read how to sell used dive gear.
