How to Inspect a Used Regulator: A Bench Technician’s Checklist
This is the sequence our bench runs on every used regulator before it is certified. You can run the first half of it yourself on a table; the second half needs gauges.
On the table, no tools
- Look into the first stage inlet. Green or white corrosion around the filter means water got in. A discolored sintered filter is normal wear; crust behind it is not.
- Turn the yoke screw or DIN wheel. It should run smoothly the whole way. Gritty or stiff means salt in the threads, which means the rest was not rinsed either.
- Flex every hose near both fittings. Cracks, bulges or a hard glassy surface are a replacement, not a negotiation.
- Press the purge on each second stage. It should move freely and return crisply. A lazy return means a tired diaphragm or a sticky lever.
- Check the mouthpiece and exhaust tee. Cracked bite tabs and torn tees are cheap to replace but tell you how the rest was treated.
- Find the serial number on the first stage and check it against the manufacturer's recall list before you pay.
With a tank and a gauge
- Intermediate pressure: connect an IP gauge to a low-pressure port, pressurize, and read it. Most balanced first stages sit between 125 and 145 psi; the exact figure for your model is on our service intervals and bench specs page. Now watch it for a minute. If it climbs, the high-pressure seat is leaking and the regulator is not safe to dive until rebuilt.
- Creep and lockup: a healthy first stage rises to its IP and stops dead. Any drift is a rebuild.
- Cracking effort: with the second stage in a bowl of water, note the depth at which it begins to flow. The manufacturer's range is typically 0.8 to 1.4 inches of water for a primary. Too easy free-flows at depth; too hard is exhausting.
- Leaks: submerge the whole pressurized set and watch for a stream of bubbles from any port, swivel or hose fitting. A slow stream from a port plug is a $2 O-ring; a stream from a first stage body is a service.
What a bench adds
A service bench measures all of this under load and against a reference, and a technician adjusts the regulator to the number rather than to "feels fine". The three things that fail most on used regulators
High-pressure seats, which wear into a groove and creep. Second stage diaphragms, which stiffen with age and raise cracking effort. And hoses, which are the only part of a regulator with a real shelf life whether or not it was dived. All three are replaced in a certification service.
