How to Inspect a Used Regulator: A Bench Technician’s Checklist

This is the sequence our bench runs on every used regulator before it is certified. You can run the first half of it yourself on a table; the second half needs gauges.

What a bench adds

A service bench measures all of this under load and against a reference, and a technician adjusts the regulator to the number rather than to "feels fine". The three things that fail most on used regulators

High-pressure seats, which wear into a groove and creep. Second stage diaphragms, which stiffen with age and raise cracking effort. And hoses, which are the only part of a regulator with a real shelf life whether or not it was dived. All three are replaced in a certification service.

Questions divers ask about used gear

What intermediate pressure should a used regulator have?

It depends on the model, but most balanced first stages are set between 125 and 145 psi and must hold steady. Our published bench specs list the range per model. A rising reading means a leaking high-pressure seat.

Can I service a used regulator myself?

The soft parts are cheap, but setting intermediate pressure and cracking effort correctly needs gauges, the model's specification, and manufacturer training for the tools and torque values. It is not a table job.

How often should a regulator be serviced?

Most manufacturers say every 12 to 24 months or a set number of dives, whichever comes first. The interval for each model we service is listed on our service intervals page.
